LookCart is a Polish technology company that develops shopping kiosk software for e-commerce stores running on WooCommerce. The solution connects online sales with the physical showroom – the customer sees the product in person, places the order on a touchscreen (including variants or sizes not available on display), and pays on their own phone.
Challenges
- an interactive kiosk application that runs as a native program on the device, not a website opened in a browser;
- connecting the shopping kiosk to a WooCommerce store – categories, variants, stock levels and prices;
- payment off the device – the self-service kiosk hands the cart over to the customer's phone with a QR code;
- reliable operation in the showroom – the touchscreen kiosk works offline after synchronization and relaunches the app on its own after a restart;
- a screensaver with product inspirations that switches straight to shopping when the screen is touched;
- one layout, many brands – swappable banners and a configurable main color for future deployments.
Solution
Fingoweb handled the full scope of kiosk software development for LookCart – from an interactive kiosk application built from scratch with Electron, React and TypeScript, through a custom PHP plugin extending WooCommerce, to the API layer connecting those two. Rather than adapting off-the-shelf kiosk software, the team designed the application around one specific sales scenario – a self-service purchase in a physical showroom, completed with a payment on the customer’s phone.
The purchase path starts before the customer even touches the screen:
- When idle, the kiosk displays a full-screen product inspiration module.
- Touching the screen opens manual navigation, which leads straight to the product page of the item on display.
- The customer browses categories and products pulled from the online store and picks variants from select fields – the product description changes with the selected variant.
- They add products to the cart and enter a discount code or, with help from the showroom staff, an affiliate code.
- Once the cart is confirmed, the application generates a QR code – scanning it with a phone carries the complete cart over to the online store, where the customer fills in their details and pays.
- The same link is sent to the e-mail address provided, so the purchase can be completed after leaving the showroom.
The kiosk application supports:
- a category and product catalog managed directly from WooCommerce, with per-product visibility settings and a configurable root category;
- product pages with net and gross prices, promotional prices and the lowest price from the last 30 days, as required by the Omnibus directive;
- product variants selected from one or more select fields, with clear information about unavailable combinations;
- “Free delivery” and “Best price guarantee” badges assigned automatically from the store’s configuration;
- a cart with WooCommerce coupons and affiliate codes, plus real-time delivery cost calculation;
- cart handover to the customer’s phone via QR code and a cart link sent by e-mail;
- offline operation after synchronization – completing the purchase only requires internet on the shopper’s phone;
- automatic app launch after a device restart and a daily maintenance restart outside showroom hours;
- an admin panel in WooCommerce – product visibility, screensaver content, filtering of orders started on the kiosk, and customization of banners and the app’s main color.
The result is a complete LookCart sales ecosystem – a kiosk application and a WooCommerce plugin built as a white-label product. Rolling it out for a new brand only takes swapping the banners and the main color, with no changes to the layout or application logic. The software runs on FullHD and 4K touchscreen kiosks in landscape orientation, based on Linux.
